Bridgwater Town Hall Island
Bridgwater Town Hall Island (THIS) project has seen a coalition of local community and cultural partners working with the town, district and county councils to re-invigorate the ageing Town Hall Theatre and redundant municipal buildings in the High Street heart of the town.
The Engine Room is located at one end of the Island site.
There have been several positive outcomes from this process over recent months:
- Somerset Film is to be granted a 99 year peppercorn lease on the Engine Room site and the adjacent shop premises
- Committed to accessibility and inclusivity, the build of Engine Room 2.0 will embrace a disabled film unit and a people’s film and TV archive as well as enhanced production, post production, training, online and studio facilities
- Sedgemoor DC have agreed to spend £1.6 million on making good the external fabric of the Town Hall and adjoining buildings. This will have significant benefit to the existing users of the Town Hall theatre in particular including Bridgwater Carnival clubs, Pantomime and Operatic Societies
- The coalition of local partners have agreed to form a new charitable company entitled Bridgwater Cultural Partners to provide a powerful voice for culture in relation not just to the Island site but also to the wider community
Somerset Film's new security of tenure together with the Council's investment in the Town Hall moves us forward towards our collective vision of Bridgwater town centre as a thriving hub of cultural and community engagement.
